Combating the root cause: chronic inflammation

Chronic inflammation is among the most common concerns for customers of Blue Hills Natural Foods Market. Indeed, it is at the foundation of most health issues today – from joint damage to stomach problems and from cancer to heart disease.

Typically inflammation is a sign that your body is healing or defending itself. When your immune system senses that it is under attack, it responds by activating proteins to protect cells and tissue. Often times, the response brings about swelling, pain or discomfort, as is the case with swollen glands, a bruise or an infected cut. The inflammation lasts as long as it takes for the body to rush valuable nutrients to the affected area and to heal it.

Chronic inflammation occurs when the body is not able to heal. It may also be the result of an autoimmune disorder that attacks normal, healthy tissue or of exposure to a low-level irritant over a long period.

Asthma, tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis and sinusitis are among the conditions that are associated with chronic inflammation. Although inflammation is necessary for healing, when it becomes chronic, steps must be taken to control it.

One of the most important approaches to controlling chronic inflammation is through exercise, which can lead to weight loss. People who are overweight have more inflammation than those who have their weight under control. Exercise, especially when combined with such activities as meditation and yoga, is also a way of managing chronic stress, which also contributes to inflammation.

Managing your diet is also very important to controlling inflammation. Foods that help protect against inflammation are foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, tofu, walnuts, flax seeds and soybeans.  Also helpful are a variety fruits and vegetables, including grapes, celery, blueberries, garlic, olive oil, tea and spices such as ginger, rosemary and turmeric. These foods increase alkalinity, which works to lower inflammation. Foods to avoid include unhealthy animal fats, egg yolks, carbohydrates and processed sugars.

At Blue Hills Natural Foods Market we seek to enhance your ability to fight chronic inflammation with a wide variety of helpful, natural options. These include, but are not limited to, Bosmed + Boswellia with Frankincense Oil, which protects cells against oxidative damage; CuraMed, which delivers 500 times more curcumin, the main active ingredient for inflammation relief, to the blood than turmeric, and Inflamma-Less, a formula of Indian botanicals intended to relieve stress.

We welcome your questions about these and other products, and we will work with you as you strive to lower your inflammation and live the healthier life that your deserve.
